8th. May sent in reply to your telegram of the 7th. May regarding the German subject Andreas Bune. En clair versions of these tele-

-grams are enclosed.

Mr. Bune, who has been for some years establish, -ed as a ship-broker in Hongkong, left for Manila by the S. 8. "Taming" on the 4th. August, immediately before the declaration of war, his business being, according to his own statement, to arrange for the transfer of the ships belonging to Messrs. Jebsen and Company to the American Flag. It was suspected by the Naval Authori -ties that while in Manila he assisted in the supply of coal from that port to the German Far Eastern Squadron.

He arrived back in Hongkong on board the $. S. "Taming" on the 23rd. October stating as the ostensible reason for his return that he had concluded his business in Manila. It is believed that he was in fact led to return because his partner was at the time living in Hongkong on parôle and he did not know, when he left Manila, of the internment of German residents.

Mr. Bune has admitted that he is in the Second Landsturm and that he is liable to service in Germany. He is in
